Diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a car exhaust system component which is responsible for eliminating exhaust soot. The legislation, which made DPFs mandatory in diesel engines, is known as Euro 4 and has been introduced in 2006. The particles collected by the DPF filter have to be burned off to make space for the new ones and increase the performance of the DPF. The regeneration process is performed on regular basis, but to ensure its effectiveness, the car has to be driven at a minimum speed of 40 mph for a couple of minutes.
